Self-Empathy Intensive Overview

After establishing a foundation in ‘seeing’ feelings and needs in the people around us through the practice of empathy, we turn the attention towards ourselves to develop our self-empathy skills. Self-Empathy is a practice that allows us to disentangle all the components of our inner experience: thoughts, feelings, needs. This creates an experiential clarity, which is the foundation for self-compassion and empowerment.

This intensive training is intended to establish and deepen our ability to self-empathize as a key to being compassionate with ourselves, in our significant relationships and in our professional lives. This will help us embrace our reactivity rather than resisting it, and learning to find a way to restore self-connection and be able to speak from a grounded space, even when powerful emotions arise. Dialogue, mediation, sharing NVC, and perhaps most importantly, knowing what we want to do, versus what we think we should do, are all supported by our skills in self-empathy.

Throughout this training, we will practice the art of slowing down and listen to the wisdom of our life energy (feelings, needs) as a guide in responding to difficult events, making decisions, shaping our beliefs and ultimately living a life of choice vs. habitual judgments and reactivity.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Completing this training fulfills the pre-requisites to attend the Dialogue Intensive Training and the Self-Empathy Labs.

  • Transforming our relationship to pain though mourning

  • Developing the ability to appreciate and celebrate ourselves and others

  • Transforming shame/guilt/self-judgments into life-serving energies

  • Developing self-compassion for our “mistakes”

  • Making needs-based decisions and working with apparently conflicting needs

  • Understanding (and sometimes transforming) our beliefs through the lens of needs

PREREQUISITES: This program is designed for those who have completed the NYCNVC Empathy Intensive Training, or an equivalent empathy training of at least 16-20 hours. Ongoing empathy practice is also highly recommended.
