Training Overview

making nonviolent communication a part of your life

At NYCNVC, we are dedicated to helping you clearly understand and effectively integrate the skills of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) in your daily life. Rather than just a language model or a way of speaking, we see NVC as a powerful and creative way to understand and navigate our relationships, grounded in an awareness of needs - a doorway to our common humanity

Learning and integrating NVC involves a deep look at habitual, disconnecting patterns of thinking and language, and the creation of new ones that can support connection, compassion and conflict resolution.

Our trainings are designed to impart a clear, comprehensive and progressive understanding and experience of what NVC is and how it can make a difference in our relationships and our lives.

Along with group trainings, we also offer 1-1 mentoring sessions for those who wish to receive personalized support in learning and integrating NVC in their life.

  • Whether in person or online, when you work with NYCNVC you can expect to experience:

    • Care - We are committed to providing beautiful, safe, comfortable and supportive environments for our participants and trainers.

    • Respect - Every person's needs are held equally and all of our trainings are "request oriented", a partnership between the trainers and the participants. You will not be pressured to do an exercise or speak if you prefer not to.

    • Fun - Yes, we take NVC training seriously and at times we may feel sad. We also appreciate, enjoy and celebrate life... sometimes we laugh at (with) it.

    • Accuracy - We are committed to clearly understanding and articulating the work of Marshall Rosenberg.

    • Access - Our team works relentlessly to bridge economic, geographic and cultural boundaries by creating and implementing systems to offer globally consistent, multi-lingual, multi-cultural, no-cost and low-cost NVC training.

Infusing Compassion Within Ourselves, Our Relationships, Our World

From Discovery to Integration:
The Learning Journey

Developing needs awareness as a key to navigate all relationships is a life-long journey, grounded in learning, practice and community. At NYCNVC, for over 20 years, we’ve been developing and refining a unique sequence of core trainings that can take your from the discovery of foundational NVC concepts to a deeper integration of needs awareness in your relationship with yourself and in dialogue with others.

As you progress along the way, you will also have access to increasing practice opportunities offered to our alumni, which are essential to continue integrating these skills and be part of an ever increasing learning community.

introductory workshops (2-3 hours)

Offered at least once a month (see First Mondays), our introductory workshops provide a clear overview of the foundational concepts and skills of Nonviolent Communication. These presentations, offered both online and in-person, are highly informative, experiential, interactive and fun - an ideal opportunity to take a first look at this work and our unique way of teaching it.

Core Curriculum overview

Our core trainings are offered sequentially, both online and in-person (NYC/Upstate NY), multiple times a year. You can craft your path based on your needs and availability, provided you follow the sequence outlined below. Once you complete each level you will have life-long access to multiple practice opportunities offered by NYCNVC trainers and facilitators, as well as access to an alumni directory where you can look for practice partners and empathy buddies.

foundational trainings

  • Discovery Trainings (Online & In-Person) (16-20h)

    • These highly experiential trainings lay a comprehensive foundation for the theory and real-life application of NVC. They take us from the very beginning concepts to a deeper understanding of the purpose, meaning and opportunities NVC can create in our lives and in our world.

    • Offered multiple times a year, online and in person (in the New York City area and beyond), these trainings provide you with all you need to start having a clear understanding of the fundamental tenets of NVC, as well as a functioning support system and empathy practice.

Intermediate & advanced trainings

  • Empathy Intensive Trainings (Online & In-person) (12-16h)

    • These trainings are intended to support participants in having a deeper integration of empathy and seeing our world empathically. This is an essential skill and practice that will provide the foundation for integrating NVC at a deeper level, and is an essential pre-requisite for subsequent advanced trainings.

    • Throughout this training, participants learn to increase our capacity for being present, focus our awareness on feelings and needs and cultivate an intention for curious and open listening, to ourselves and one another.

  • Self-Empathy Intensive Trainings (Online & In-person) (~20h)

    • These trainings are intended to establish and deepen our ability to self-empathize as a key to being compassionate with ourselves, in our significant relationships and in our professional lives.

    • This will help us embrace our reactivity rather than resisting it, and find a way to restore self-connection and be able to speak from a grounded space, even when powerful emotions arise.

  • Dialogue Intensive Trainings (Online & In-person) (~20h)

    • Once we have established our journey to seeing ourselves and the world empathically, dialogue is the way to support us creating a world where everyone’s needs matter.

    • These trainings introduce the building blocks of Needs-based dialogue, which provides a process grounded in deep mutual understanding and a path to navigate difficult conversations and transform conflict in any relationship.

ongoing practice opportunities for NYCNVC alumni

The following practice opportunities are offered by NYCNVC trainers and facilitators on a regular basis. They are aimed to support the NYCNVC Alumni community to stay connected and practice with folks with comparable level of experience and training. Alumni receive monthly e-mail reminders with dates and links to register for each event. They are also invited to be part of an Empathy Buddy Directory where they can find empathy and practice partners.

  • All NYCNVC Alumni will have access to an empathy buddy directory. Participants can add themselves and look through the directory for empathy buddies. The directory will list information such as level of experience, preferred dates and times, geographic location and relevant information that helps each participant find the best fit for them.

    • Every 4th Wednesdays, alternating between 12pm and 7:30pm ET.

    • Pre-requisite: Discovery Program/Weekend

    • Facilitators introduce and model a particular empathy-related concept or skill. Participants have the choice to practice the skill in breakouts or to remain with the facilitators to participate or observe.

    • Every 1st Thursdays 11:30am ET and 3rd Sundays 7pm ET.

    • Pre-requisite: Discovery Program/Weekend

    • Facilitators review the fundamental structure of an empathy exchange

    • All circle participants are divided into breakouts of 2 or more people to practice exchanging empathy (there is no large group practice or observation).

    • Dates will be announced on a monthly basis.

    • Pre-requisite: Self-Empathy Intensive

    • These advanced labs are open to folks who completed the Self-Empathy Intensive training. Each lab reviews a core self-empathy practice and offers an opportunity to witness a live demo followed by breakout practice.

    • Dates will be announced on a monthly basis.

    • Pre-requisite: Dialogue Intensive, former Integration Program

    • These advanced labs are open to folks who completed the Dialogue Intensive. Each lab provides an opportunity to review the steps of needs-connected dialogue, witness a live role play and practice with a partner

individual and small group Mentoring

  • In addition to group training, NYCNVC offers mentoring for those who would like to receive individual support from an NYCNVC trainer. Mentoring offers the opportunity to apply your learning to your personal life and circumstances.

  • Mentors use a combination of empathy, NVC education and exercises to help you develop the areas where growth and integration is desired and use your natural strengths more fully. By working with situations that apply specifically to your life situation and relationships, the learning is greatly intensified.
